My Friend’s Spiritual Transformation

I have several friends who live farther from me, from college days, that I continue to visit with by phone occasionally, like every few months or so. “KH” is one of them. I assume I understand her personality and expect to have certain rather repetitive conversations with her.

She requested a conversation this past week and I didn’t realize the magnitude of what she told me until we got off the phone. She has always been a practicing Catholic. She said that this year she decided that if she goes to the gym an hour a day, she can give God an hour a day, too. She did this for Lent. She participated in Catholic services and rituals during Lent and as I understand it this includes self-reflection and letting go of things through prayer and adopting trust of God instead. She said it led to her having a spiritual transformation. She said she had sort of an “encounter”. She saw the world as “fluff”. She could care less about material things.

When she told me this, I didn’t take it real seriously. We continued to talk about other things. But when we got off the phone I realized she sounded different. She had slowed down. She sounded at peace. She has a couple subjects she usually loves to talk about and in some cases rant about and this time she didn’t mention either one of them. She didn’t seem to be striving for anything and I know how Type A she is. So, I realized she really had undergone a spiritual transformation. I will speak to her again before long to find out more about her experience and how it is playing out in her life now.

I think it’s interesting to share this because every one of us has our own path. Mine is different from hers but I am so excited and happy for her. The traditional Christian church is widely unrespected in our modern times, but there is so much good that happens in those congregations. I also think it is of value to spend time in sacred purified spaces, which no doubt, she did. That may have contributed to her awakening.

Peace to all. She has found inner peace, I felt it. May each of us find inner peace through whatever way our unique path takes us.
