Those Who Are Angry About Politics

Kings ~ 1909 ~ Mikalojus Ciurlionis

I listen to a multitude of talk show hosts and guests on a weekly basis and over the last decade it’s been interesting to witness their political views if they have any. Might politics be a spiritual test? Surely, it is a challenge. Surely, we need some positive reforms.

A crystal ball might tell us how things will turn out in the end but unless we own one, we are clueless. Today’s events are molding a future reality. Let’s not be short sighted about what is unfolding.

Anger will get us no where. Yoko Ono tweeted this back when politics was on edge in early 2017 and it hasn’t changed much since then… “Is anger doing you any good? If it’s not, forget it, and move on.”

And during this same time period, Paulo Coelho tweeted this, “The world is changed by your actions, not by your opinion.”

These stood out because other well known “spiritual” leaders (like Deepak Chopra) were expressing their anger, judging, and some seemed quite assured that they knew best about the day’s events.

Protecting our safety and freedom, and promoting peace and human potential seem like spiritual values, to me. Being intolerant of other’s views, not so much. Judging anyone who doesn’t think like me, not so much. Controlling who can speak or who I can listen to, not very free. Saying you’re moving to Canada if so and so gets elected, and you won’t socialize with someone because of their politics is pretty intolerant. We need middle ground.

Change begins with each one of us. If we keep our own vibrational levels high and add positive energy to a situation, we do the world more good than by expressing anger and bringing negative energy to it.

When spiritual leaders and talk show hosts are reduced to reactionary angry conversations, it is an effort to control. It is ego-driven. In so doing, they reveal more about themselves than they do about the news itself. Always look for the quality of inner peace in those you follow.

Many spiritual individuals have abandoned following headlines and news, and they did so long ago. Why drag yourself down to that level? That said, I have great respect for those doing the good civil work necessary to keep this nation humming for the good of all because we need those who have that calling in life.

Mahatma Gandhi said, “If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change.”

Practice gratitude, kindness, and compassion. Seek and promote truth. Maintain humility with nonjudgment while discerning what is right for you to do in each moment as life unfolds, most assuredly, with surprises. Think for yourself. Be joyful.
