Be the Witness and Surrender the Ego

Doves flying over the sea

Awareness and Ego Cannot Coexist.–Eckhart Tolle p. 64 A New Earth

It doesn’t take long for those of us who are spiritual seekers to realize that our own egos obstruct our paths towards enlightenment. When we complain, or get angry, or judge, or hold a grudge, or control a situation or another person, we are allowing our thinking ego to be in charge. When we feel morally superior to someone else, that is our ego in charge. When we are never satisfied, that is our ego in charge. When we take life too seriously, too personally, that is our ego in charge. Our ego is our false self.

However, if we can step back enough to witness and recognize our own ego’s voice, then we suddenly weaken the ego in the very act of our awareness of it. Forgiveness comes to us naturally once we let go of our egos. The true you is the awareness of the ego. By being present in each moment, by living in the now, we become aware.

A strong ego equals unawareness.

Ego and awareness are mutually exclusive, that is, they cannot exist together.

If we can remind ourselves to recognize our ego for what it is, then that very awareness or recognition will weaken or destroy our ego. Only then will we be able to advance on our spiritual path, a path filled with peace and equanimity. The awakened path can alleviate physical stress and health problems, too. Our personal relationships will also improve.
