Surely someone else has asked this question before, but to me it is original. I asked it of my husband on our dog walk two nights ago and have been contemplating it ever since.
Because of a book I am reading that describes the lives of various people in a small dying town in rural China in the past 200 years, because of my lifetime of observing people, and because of the various types of people we are told about on the news or through today’s social media threads, the bottom line is that we are very diverse in our thinking, in our views, and in how we spend our time, what motivates us, what we deem to be important, and so on. Though there are “archetypes” we are very diverse. We tend to judge people according to first impressions but often we change our mind about those first impressions once we get to know someone better. When we have a conversation with a stranger, we discover that everyone has an interesting story to tell.
So here is my question, “If everyone in the world was just like me, what kind of world would that be?”
What would be good about that world? What would be bad about that world? What might not function well in that world?
The answers to those questions are worth contemplating, however, the bigger picture also suggests we need our diversity. Our differences work together to create a functioning world. Though we each do our best and think that is the correct path, we face the fact that the world needs other types of people because we can’t possibly offer enough to make it beautiful. We are all connected and in our collective whole we have what we need, what is right.
So, to me, the question resulted in a greater appreciation for our diversity.
