In this Stanford sponsored series on compassion on youtube, this interview by Indian spiritual teacher, Amma, teaches us Eastern thought about compassion and helping each other contrasted to the nuclear family and isolation in the Western world.
Amma says compassion is a decision you make each day to do something for someone else. It is love that spills over from us to others out of oneness. It has a ripple effect because if I share of myself, others see that role model and they do it too and pretty soon everyone is doing good and sharing to help each other.
Amma says that the purpose of spirituality to to have peace and happiness inside, to love ourselves and others, to be at peace at all times even when chaos surrounds us.
